Overview
Flies land on rubbish and waste and then on food, transferring bacteria as they go. For cafés, restaurants and food manufacturers, fly control is part of meeting food-safety obligations.
How to identify flies
House fly (Musca domestica)
Grey, 6–7 mm with four dark stripes on the thorax. Breeds in rubbish and organic waste.
Blowflies (Calliphoridae)
Large, metallic green or blue. Breed in meat scraps, dead animals and bins.
Drain & fruit flies
Tiny flies that breed in the film inside drains and in fermenting fruit — a common problem in commercial kitchens and bars.
Signs you have a problem
- Flies gathering around bins, drains and back doors
- Small flies hovering around sinks, floor drains and fruit bowls
- Maggots in bins
Why it matters
- Spread bacteria that cause food poisoning
- Customer complaints and food safety audit issues
How we treat flies
- 1
Breeding-site inspection
Bins, drains, grease traps and waste areas are inspected to find where flies breed.
- 2
Treatment & drain programs
Residual surface treatments outside, drain treatments for small flies, and advice on sanitation.
- 3
Fly control units
For commercial sites, we can recommend and position UV light fly control units.
